Travel to ... Corfu

The island of Corfu (kerkyra) is located just off the West coast of Greece and is one of the ionian islands. Corfu enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate along with excellent beaches making it a popular destination for holiday makers. The island of corfu is very green compared to other Greek islands: hot and dry summers along with winter rain creates lush vegetation dominated by over 2 million olive trees. These olive trees on Corfu are the main cultivation, although Corfu's tourism now provides the most income.

Corfu has seen a colourful past where Greek, Roman, Venetian and French occupations have left their marks, including two forts. Many myths and legends feature Corfu including: Hercules, Homer, Odysseus and Jason with his Argonauts. Not surprisingly, Corfu town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and this has helped to protect and preserve the architecture and monuments on Corfu.

Corfu (kerkyra) is also the name of the capital of the island a city of around 30.000 citizens located at the center of the island. You can travel to corfu town by plane to the Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport or by ferry to the port of corfu. The tourist facilities are well developed and range from small apartments to large luxurious hotels and villas.

The visitor of corfu will find that the island offers experiences for every kind of taste. Apart from the sea, you can go diving, climbing, you can visit numerous archaeological sites, dine in excellent restaurants and more. A travel to corfu is an experience you don't want to miss.

Two days at Corfu Town.

What to do in the morning:

The first thing someone should do when he visits Corfu is to go for a walk in the Spianada. Combining the end of the walk with a coffee in one of the numerous coffee places around Liston (Liston today is a meeting place for everybody and a memory will always linger connecting the Liston with the people one has seen there. Each arcade is decorated with a lamp which is lit at night.), preferably one of the ones at the end, so you can enjoy the view of the palace of Georgiou Paulou and Kofineta. This part of corfu is the meeting place for people of various age groups.

The "Kipos tou laou" is another place to enjoy a coffee at Corfu. The amazing view includes the old fortress of Corfu, Falirakh and Vidos (a small island next to Corfu).

Last but not least, one of the best coffee places of the island is the Aktaion. Located in the upper part of the Spianada, Aktaion offers an amazing view of the crystal clear Ionian sea and the Garitsa bay.

Where to eat:

If you are a fun of seafood you should definitely pay a visit to Brunos restaurant near the Eboriko or the famous tavern Roula located at the Gouvia (a small village a few kilometers north of corfu town).

Brounos is ideal for the visitors that don't want to move away from the Corfu town. For the most adventurous and the ones that want to explore as many places of corfu as possible then Roula is a must. Please be aware that both restaurants are for the people who appreciate seafood and would not mind paying a bit more.

Anemomilos is another famous area of the corfu island. Full of taverns that have their tables spread among a lovely area full of trees and plants always with close view of the ionian sea.

For the ones looking to have something quick and dirty, like small snacks and ouzo, ( a traditional Greek drink) they should definitely visit Nautillos in the Anemomilos area or one of the numerous snack-bars in the Kanoni area (Kanoni in greek means cannon and when you visit the are you will find out why is that) . The latter has to offer an amazing view of Pontikonisi, Chalkiopolos lake and the church of Vlacherena.

What to do in the afternoon:

If you want to consider yourself a proper visitor then the roof garden of the hotel Kavalieri, next to the Ionion Academy, is a must. It is a coffee-restaurant with a panoramic view of the old Corfu town and the Garitsa bay. Don't forget to try one of the delicious sweets especially during sunshine.

The town hall square, literally in the heart of Spianada has a variety choices for a great dinner. All the aforementioned apart from tourists attract many locals as well.

Nightlife at Corfu:
Numerous bars give the visitors the opportunity to choose what suits them most. Music wise the rock audience should visit Hook bar. Hook is by far the best place to listen to rock music although often it includes some pop tracks. Base and INSIDE are two near by bars that worth paying a visit.

The pop fans have o wider range of choices in and around the Corfu center like Destil in the upper part of Spianada. For the more romantic ones the bar at the top of the old fortress is a choice you will not regret.

Corfu late night (or early morning if you prefer):

On your way home after a hard day's night out don't forget to stop by "Ever Green" in the Square of Giorgakis. The delicious crepe and the amazing chiapatas is the perfect way to end your day or night if you wish.
