Greek islands are the numerous islands located in the Aegean sea the sea of Crete, the Dodekanese islands and the Ionian sea. There are around 6000 Greek islands of which 227 are inhabited. Most of the inhabited islands are well known tourist destinations, which excellent hotels and apartments, beautiful beaches and ancient archaeological sites.
You can travel to the greek islands by boat or by airplane since many of them have an airport. Many people choose to rent a yacht, planning a trip to more than one islands -- an excellent choice since there too many things to see and do. Finally you can opt for one of the many offers for a cruise around the greek islands, and see many of them in fewer days. But that's just a "to know us better" visit. If you really want to travel to greek islands, you should plan at least a week in each of the large ones and 3 days in the smallest.
Greek islands offer all kinds of services . You will find luxurious hotels, small apartments, camping facilities, restaurants, spas etc. You can do boat trips to nearby islands, go fishing, diving, sailng (water sports facilities can also be found everywhere). You can walk in the narrow streets of traditional villages, visit monuments of the ancient greek and the medieval era, visit monasteries and churches, and many more.

Aegina is a popular destination for athenians, looking to spend their weekend in a nearby island. Being only 35 minutes away from Peiraus, it attracts a large number of athenians every weekend.
Aegina is mostly considered a family place. There are not that many bars and night clubs, and if you are a party animal you will be better off going to paros, mykonos and other such islands. There however are many taverns and bar/restaurants all over the island, that will accomodate anyone else.

Flying Dolphin to Aegina

Aegina is a small island a few miles south of Peiraus. The easiest way to get to aegina is by boat from the port of peiraus.

There are daily depertures of Flying Dolphins (hydrofoil ferries) for Aegina. With these very fast ferries, the trip to aegina lasts about 35 minutes. You cannot take your car or motorbike with you though. Use regular ferries if you want to take your car with you. Regular ferries cost less, but the trip lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Beaches in Elounda

The beaches of Elounda are numerous and for all kinds of taste. There is the main sandy beach in the center of the town. Those who prefer pebbles can visit the beach of Plaka, a village next to Elounda about 4km away. One of the main attractions or Elounda is the beach of Kolokytha, located on the Elounda peninsula, with its white sand and crystal water. You can get there either by car - in this case you will have to leave the car at a point and walk about 10 minutes - or by one of the boats you can find in the port of Elounda.

History of Elounda

Ancient Elounda (Olous) was a minoan city. It was partly destroyed hit by a tidal wave caused by the explosion of the Santorini volcano, estimated to have occurred in the mid second millennium BC. Ruins of the ancient city of Olous can bee seen under the sea in elounda peninsula.

Minoan and Roman graves as well as temples dedicated to the ancient greek gods can also be found around elounda. Monuments of the byzantine period have also been found in elounda such as the byzantine mosaic on the elounda peninsula.

Elounda

Elounda is a town placed on the north-eastern coast of Crete, in the picturesque gulf of Mirabello, about 70 km from the Heraklion airport and 10 km from the town of Aghios Nikolaos. Elounda is a quite small town with almost 2.000 residents. In reality it is a union of 4 small villages : Pano Elounda, Kato Elounda, Mavrikiano and Skisma which is the center of elounda. In the summer it is full of visitors and tourists. Because of its good climate and great beauty, many foreigners (mostly europeans) have chosen elounda as their permanent residence.

Heraklion has many hotels and -due to its location- it is the ideal base for the visitor who wishes to explore the island of crete. Every other site in crete is accessible with small one-day trips from heraklion. In fact, that is heraklion's main attraction to the visitor.

Clubbing in heraklion

The night life is a major attraction of the city of heraklion. The entertainment industry has flourished in the last decades, to accomodate the needs of locals, students and tourists. It is a city that never sleeps. After the clubbing you do not want to miss the unique souvlaki in "thraka", in the venizelou square.

History of Heraklion

The history of heraklion goes back many millenia, being the center of the minoan civilization which spread among the greek islands. Knossos (an ancient city located right outside heraklion) was the capital of the minoan kings and the place were the original labyrinth was built. Heraklion flourished through the ages and was known as the "great castle" in the medieval ages, when the - gigantic !! - city wall was constructed by venetians. The city fell to the ottomans in 1669, after a 22 year siege (the second-longest siege in history).

Heraklion

Heraklion is the capital of the island of crete, located at the north of the island. Heraklion is the largest city of crete and one the largest in greece. With a population of around 150.000 people and more than 200.000 in the metropolitan area, it is the administrative and economic center of crete.

The island of Alonissos (or Alonnisos, as the greek spelling goes) is located on the north-western part of the Aegean Sea, and is part of the North Sporades island group.

Quiet and out of the main tourist routes, Alonissos features unspoiled nature, crystal clear beaches and picturesque bays. The island is popular with sail boat travellers as its fiord-like coastline offers calm waters and privacy. As the seat of the first national marine park of Greece, Alonissos also attracts naturalists and volunteers who work toward the preservation of the Monachus-Monachus Mediterranean seal (monk seal).

Alonissos features 2 4star hotels, a few 3 star hotels and many rooms and villas for rent. It is worth to spend a couple of nights at Hora, the old village, if only to soak the atmosphere and enjoy majestic vistas of the rest of the Sporades at sunset (Hora is built on the mountain but is only a few minutes’ ride from nearby beaches). There are also two camping sites on the island, at Patitiri and at Steni Vala.

In the gulf of Mirabello on the north-eastern coast of Crete, lies an inlet, Korfos gulf. In the entrance of this inlet, which forms a natural harbor, and just opposite the village of Elounda, a little island called Spinalonga is located. This small island, despite its size, has played a big role in the local, cretan even greek history.

You can travel to Spinalonga by boat from Elounda and Agios Nikolaos.
Day trips are scheduled from Malia, Hersonissos and other cities of Crete.

Agios Nikolaos (Aghios Nikolaos), a town on the north-eastern coast of Crete island, is one of the three largest cities of the province of Lasithi along with Ierapetra and Sitia. It is the capital of this province of Crete and has 19.000 inhabitants. Agios Nikolaos is well known for its tourism.

Travel Information: 

Agios Nikolaos is located 60km west of Heraklion. You can take a bus from the international airport of Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis, or the Heraklion harbor.

The island of Corfu (kerkyra) is located just off the West coast of Greece and is one of the ionian islands. Icaria belongs to the dodekanese islands complex of Eastern Aegean sea. Icaria is located to the west of Samos and its first name was Dolichi but it was finally named after the Greek Mythology hero Icarus, the first man that ever managed to fly according to the deadalus and icarus myth.
