Travel to ... Lendas
Lendas is a small village on the south coast of crete, around 70 km from heraklion airport. It will take you about two hours to travel to lendas by car from heraklion, since the road passes through two of the largest mountains in crete : Psiloritis and Asterousia. It's not easy, but it's well worth the effort. Your tiredness will fade away after a few hours in one of the most peaceful places in mediterranean.
Reaching the village from above you will see the lion-head shaped lendas cape that gave its name to the village (lendas is a name deriverd from the word lion). The village is small, with less than 1000 residents, but you will easily find a place to stay as there are many "rooms to let" and a few hotels.
The beach of lendas, as well as the nearby beach of "trafoulas" are simply magnificent. The water of the libyan sea is quite cold, especially if you are visiting early in the season, but they are very beautiful, and clean. A few restaurants are by the beach, offering fresh fish, and delicious vegetables from the local glass houses and the nearby messara valey.
Lendas is also an ancient Greek and Roman site, and has several archaeological sites (such as the temple of asklipios and the byzantine church of Agios Ioannis Theologos) you can visit if you wish. For the adventurers, the beach of trafoulas (or Dragon Bay), around 10 km east of lendas offers a few caves and a rock climbing site.
