Agios nikolaos as seen from the road to elounda marina beach in the center of Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos (Aghios Nikolaos), a town on the north-eastern coast of Crete island, is one of the three largest cities of the province of Lasithi along with Ierapetra and Sitia. It is the capital of this province of Crete and has 19.000 inhabitants. Agios Nikolaos is well known for its tourism.

It is almost 60 km from the international airport of Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis, and 10 km from the famous tourist resort of Elounda. Agios Nikolaos is also accessible from the sea, connected to the port of Piraeus every other day. Although Agios Nikolaos is placed on the eastern side of Crete, its location does not prevent you from exploring the whole island. The frequent bus lines from Agios Nikolaos to Heraklion, Ierapetra and Sitia will give you the chance to visit any place of Crete you like, even if you don’t have a car.

Agios Nikolaos (Aghios Nikolaos) means in greek Saint Nikolas, who is the patron saint of the sailors. There are many cities and villages(1) with the name agios nikolaos in greece, but this is the largest one of them. The town took its name from the byzantine little church built in the bay of Agios Nikolaos. It is a well known tourist resort with big and luxurious hotels but also affordable studios and apartments. Agios Nikolaos can be your summer resort no matter how much money you have decided to spend on your holiday.

Agios Nikolaos, being a town built by the sea, has numerous beaches where you can enjoy swimming. Almyros, almost 4 km from Agios Nikolaos on the way to Ierapetra, is a large organized sandy beach. It is perfect for children as the depth of the sea doesn't exceed the 2m even if you walk 30m from the shore. It even has a sea playground and the children just love it. Gargadoros, just outside the town of Agios Nikolaos, is a charming pebble beach surrounded by rocks. The water is crystal clear and don't forget to take your diving mask with you. If you don't want to leave the center of Agios Nikolaos, there are three beaches in different parts of the town you will be able to chose from. Kyrtoplateia, Amoudi and Marina beach are beautiful beaches right next to the restaurants and cafeterias of the town.

Agios Nikolaos is partially built on the ruins of the ancient city of "Lato pros Kamara" or simply "Lato", which goes back to the minoan era. "Lato Etera" was the other main minoan city of the area and its ruins lie near the village of Kritsa. The museum of Agios Nikolaos will give you the chance to admire some minoan and byzantine findings from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the nearby villages.

The main attraction of Agios Nikolaos is its famous Lake in the centre of the town. In reality it is a lagoon and it has been the center of many local myths. Locals used to believe that it has no bottom and that it is connected to the volcano of Santorini. From a little park above the lake you can have a panoramic view of it. Two little islands in the gulf of Agios Nikolaos make it even more beautiful. The island of Agioi Pandes and a the smaller island of Faros (lighthouse).

In Agios Nikolaos you can try all kinds of sea sports. You will find ideal beaches for diving and scuba diving or you can try fishing by the shore or hiring a boat to take you to the open sea for bigger fish.

The restaurants of Agios Nikolaos are numerous and for all kinds of appetites. There are greek, italian and chinese restaurants and tavernas. You can try the famous greek souvlaki or traditional cretan food. Lovely cafeterias give you the chance to enjoy your coffee during the day and your drink at night. There are clubs and bars, many of them gathered in a little street called Soho. You can choose between rock, pop, greek music or combine them all together, as the clubs and bars of Agios Nikolaos are all almost next to each other and it won't take you a long time to drink a shot in each one of them. Don't drink and drive though as there are frequent police checks on the roads.
