Free camping places south of Chania and Rethymno in Crete!

South west is Kedrodassos, 1km east of Elafonisi,
West of Paliohora in the south is Gyaliskari,
5 minutes walk east of Sougia village in the south,
Lissos 1 hour walk from Sougia to the west with beautiull private beach,
Marmara beach at the exit of Aradena gorge near Sfakia in the south,
Glyka Nera beach west of Sfakia in the south,
Kato Rodakino south of Rethymno, Preveli beach south of Rethymno,
All beaches east of Preveli including Triopetra and Agios Pavlos,

In the north there are too many tourists around to free camp

It should be noted however that free camping in unsupervised areas is prohibited by Greek Law. Camping is allowed only in fully licensed camping sites.

Travel Information: 

Travel by airplane to heraklion or chania, or by ferry to heraklion, chania and rethimno. You can then take a bus to the nearest village, or rent a car/bike (much more convenient as transportation can be a problem in southern crete).

  • Beaches in Elounda

    The beaches of Elounda are numerous and for all kinds of taste. There is the main sandy beach in the center of the town. Those who prefer pebbles can visit the beach of Plaka, a village next to Elounda about 4km away. One of the main attractions or Elounda is the beach of Kolokytha, located on the Elounda peninsula, with its white sand and crystal water. You can get there either by car - in this case you will have to leave the car at a point and walk about 10 minutes - or by one of the boats you can find in the port of Elounda.

  • History of Elounda

    Ancient Elounda (Olous) was a minoan city. It was partly destroyed hit by a tidal wave caused by the explosion of the Santorini volcano, estimated to have occurred in the mid second millennium BC. Ruins of the ancient city of Olous can bee seen under the sea in elounda peninsula. Minoan and Roman graves as well as temples dedicated to the ancient greek gods can also be found around elounda. Monuments of the byzantine period have also been found in elounda such as the byzantine mosaic on the elounda peninsula.

    Elounda is a town placed on the north-eastern coast of Crete, in the picturesque gulf of Mirabello, about 70 km from the Heraklion airport and 10 km from the town of Aghios Nikolaos. Elounda is a quite small town with almost 2.000 residents. In reality it is a union of 4 small villages : Pano Elounda, Kato Elounda, Mavrikiano and Skisma which is the center of elounda.
