Elounda is a town placed on the north-eastern coast of Crete, in the picturesque gulf of Mirabello, about 70 km from the Heraklion airport and 10 km from the town of Aghios Nikolaos. Elounda is a quite small town with almost 2.000 residents. In reality it is a union of 4 small villages : Pano Elounda, Kato Elounda, Mavrikiano and Skisma which is the center of elounda. In the summer it is full of visitors and tourists. Because of its good climate and great beauty, many foreigners (mostly europeans) have chosen elounda as their permanent residence.

Elounda and its peninsula called "Nisi" (greek for "island" : the peninsula is connected to the mainland with a very narrow road which makes it seem like an island) shape a gulf, the Korfos gulf. The peninsula is a NATURA protected area, where no human constructions are allowed.

In Elounda you will of course be able to find a lot of activities related to the sea. All kinds of sea sports are available as well as scuba diving and fishing. You can fish in almost every spot of Elounda, you can hire a boat to take you fishing in the open sea or try under water fishing. The gulf of Korfos is great for wind surfing because of the ideal wind and the protection of the closed gulf.

Trekking is something else you can do when you visit Elounda. The peninsula provides many paths opened by the locals, when agriculture was one of the town's main financial sources.

Spinalonga island (or Kalidon) is another main attraction of Elounda. It is a small island in the entrance of the Korfos gulf. Elounda gulf is much like a lagoon, which makes it an ideal natural harbor and therefore, a fortress was built on the little island of Spinalonga to protect the entrance to elounda. The fortress occupies the whole island and exists until today in an excellent shape. In the first half of the century it was used as a leper colony up to 1957. The history of Spinalonga inspired the British author Victoria Hislop to write her best seller novel "The Island". You can visit Spinalonga by taking one of the many boats from the port of Elounda or Plaka.

Elounda is mainly a family place. It is full of restaurants that offer fresh fish and all kinds of international and greek cuisine. The night life is not vivid, if you wish to party you will have to go to the nearby town of aghios nikolaos (the capital of the province of lassithi). Still there are a few bars and clubs in elounda that will accommodate you throughout the night. But consider elounda if you are looking for an idyllic and peaceful place to relax and spent some quality time with friends and family.
