Crete
Crete is the largest of the greek islands, and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Heraklion is the capital of crete as well as the capital of the Heraklion prefecture. Crete is divided in three more perfectures : Lasithi (capital: Aghios nikolaos), Rethymno (Capital: Rethymno) and Chania (capital: Chania).
Crete was the center of the Minoan civilization, which spread around the greek islands until the catastrophic erruption of the santorini volcano. The visitor will be able to visit many unique cities of the minoan era, as well as ancient greek, roman byzantine and medieval monuments.
You can travel to Crete by sea or by plane. The main ports and airports are located in the two largest cities, Heraklion and Chania. There are also ports in Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos, and an airport in Sitia.
