Aegina is a popular destination for athenians, looking to spend their weekend in a nearby island. Being only 35 minutes away from Peiraus, it attracts a large number of athenians every weekend.
Aegina is mostly considered a family place. There are not that many bars and night clubs, and if you are a party animal you will be better off going to paros, mykonos and other such islands. There however are many taverns and bar/restaurants all over the island, that will accomodate anyone else.

Flying Dolphin to Aegina

Aegina is a small island a few miles south of Peiraus. The easiest way to get to aegina is by boat from the port of peiraus.

There are daily depertures of Flying Dolphins (hydrofoil ferries) for Aegina. With these very fast ferries, the trip to aegina lasts about 35 minutes. You cannot take your car or motorbike with you though. Use regular ferries if you want to take your car with you. Regular ferries cost less, but the trip lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The island of Spetses is a short distance from Greece's capital and is a popular option for many Athenians that want a few days away on an island. It is a relatively small island yet it attracts a large amount of Greek and foreign tourists. Ferries and high-speed hydrofoils arrive regularly from Piraeus and Tyros and Leonidio and Nafplion on the Peloponnese.

A trip to rememeber! My Thessaloniki

If I were given a Euro each time I was told that the northern part of Greece is a lot nicer than the south, I would be a lot better of than I am now. According to popular belief, the people are friendlier, the food is better and cheaper, services are not as snooty and the atmosphere is a lot more pleasant that the rat race known as Athens.

Patra is the largest city of west greece with a population of 300.000 people. Patra is a port city located in the north-west of the Peloponnese peninsula. Patra's port is a nodal point for trade and communication with Italy and the rest of Europe. Located 218 km west of Athens, Patras is regularly connected to athens and Eleytherios Venizelos Airport by train and buses. It is also connected by sea to the Ionian Islands and Italy ( Ancona, Venice, Bari, Brindisi ..).
The Rio-Antirio bridge that connects peloponnese with the mainland greece is located just 5 km from patras, in Rio.

Heraklion is the capital of the island of crete, located at the north of the island. Heraklion is the largest city of crete and one the largest in greece. With a population of around 150.000 people and more than 200.000 in the metropolitan area, it is the administrative and economic center of crete.

The island of Syros is located in the middle of the cycladic islands.
Proud of its long history, Syros used to be the cultural and trade centre of the Aegean in the 19th century. Its capital, Hermoupolis or Ermoupolis, named after the Greek God Hermes, was Greeceā€™s principal port and is today the largest town of the Cyclades, the capital of the archipelago and its cultural, administrative and economic centre. If you choose to visit Syros, you will not have to miss on quality concerts, theatre performances as well as art exhibitions.

Travel Information: 

As the capital of Cyclades, Syros is very well-connected with Athens and other Aegean islands. The itineraries from Piraeus to Hermoupolis are daily and the trip takes about 4 hours by normal ferry. Syros is also connected to Thessaloniki, northern Greece, in 18 hours.
Olympic Airways also offers one scheduled flight per week.

Agios Nikolaos (Aghios Nikolaos), a town on the north-eastern coast of Crete island, is one of the three largest cities of the province of Lasithi along with Ierapetra and Sitia. It is the capital of this province of Crete and has 19.000 inhabitants. Agios Nikolaos is well known for its tourism.

Travel Information: 

Agios Nikolaos is located 60km west of Heraklion. You can take a bus from the international airport of Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis, or the Heraklion harbor.

The island of Corfu (kerkyra) is located just off the West coast of Greece and is one of the ionian islands. Nafplio is a city 146km from Athens and 10 km from argos on the northeast side of peloponnese. It will take you about two hours by car to get there from the Eleftherios Venizelos airport in Athens. Nafplio was the first capital of Greece in 1829, after the greek revolution of 1821, and remained so until 1834, when Athens became the capital of Greece.

It is located by the sea of the Argolic Gulf and it has several beaches in the city and nearby areas. The Tolo village just outside Nafplio is a well known tourist destination that has some of the most beautiful beaches in the argolic gulf.

Elounda is a town placed on the north-eastern coast of Crete, in the picturesque gulf of Mirabello. Elounda is 10km from Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lassithi and 70Km from Heraklion. You can travel to Heraklion, either by plane to the international Airport Nikos Kazantzakis, or by ferry from Peiraus. You then can take a bus from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos, and another bus from Agios Nikolaos to Elounda. A taxi directly from the Airport (about 70 Km) will cost around 60 Euros.

It is a 4 hour travel from Athens International airport and an hour trip from the city of Kalamata, the capital of the province of messinia.
